Books Revive Wolf Man, Dracula, The Creature and More!

DH Press announced that it will issue a new series of novels based on Universal Pictures' classic movie monsters, with stories featuring such iconic creatures as the Wolf Man and Dracula.

The first wave of books coming in 2006 will feature Dracula, Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. In January 2006, DH will release Dracula: Asylum and Wolf Man: Hunter's Moon, each retailing for $6.99.

Dracula: Asylum, by Paul Witcover (Waking Beauty), is set in Dr. Seward's sanatorium, where Dracula was originally destroyed, and takes plays in the days directly following the end of World War I. The DH Press interpretation of Dracula will bring one of the most durable characters of vampire lore to an established readership of edgy literature.

Wolf Man: Hunter's Moon, by Michael Jan Friedman, centers on lycanthrope Lawrence Talbot, who is chased by a heretical cult dedicated to destroying all marked by the sign of the wolf.

Creature from the Black Lagoon: Time's Black Lagoon, by Paul Di Filippo, Six decades later, one scientist attempts to find out, using a time machine to journey into the past. What he finds not only shatters his vision of what the Creature might be, but could change the history of the human race forever.

The Universal Monsters are, as a group and individually, among the most recognizable characters in horror and science fiction history and have a large built-in fan base.

More Jason Vs. Jason X Comic News

More news and pictures of the upcoming Jason Vs. Jason X comic can be seen at the Comic Book Resources. This February, maniacs collide in the two-issue mini-series "Friday the 13th: Jason vs. Jason X,"

In 1980, theater goers were invited to visit Camp Crystal Lake for a little bit of R&R. What they got was horror, mayhem and a machete wielding maniac named Jason Voorhees. The movie was "Friday the 13th," which became an instant part of American pop-culture which found teens and adults alike repeating the chant "Ch, Ch, Ch, Kill, Kill, Kill" with creepy regularity. The film launched a long running franchise which saw it's 10th feature film made in 2001, "Jason X." That last film in the series (thus far) introduced horror fans to an updated Jason or "Uber-Jason"-- he sported a new look and a new machete for a new setting, a 25th century space station.

Roger Corman B Films Coming To DVD

B-movie king Roger Corman told SCI FI Wire that he will record commentaries for dozens of his movies that Buena Vista Home Entertainment will distribute over the next year, including Dinocroc, Brain Dead, Big Doll House, School Spirit, Welcome to Planet Earth and Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold. Corman said he won't do a lot of preparation for the commentaries, which will appear on the DVD special-edition releases. "I don't like to prepare for the DVD extras. I think it's better to do [them] fresh," the legendary independent producer said in an interview. "And when I do it with somebody else, it's a lot of fun. They're like mini-reunions or parties. ... I'm thinking of the great time I had with Bill Shatner for The Intruder or Angie Dickinson with Big Bad Mama. ... I hope that the good times we were having comes across on the screen."

The first wave of Corman releases hits stores on Dec. 13 and will include Death Race 2000, with a commentary Corman recorded with star Mary Woronov (Calamity Jane). Corman also hosted a new featurette on the DVD called Playing the Game: Looking Back at Death Race 2000, which includes interviews with actor Martin Kove, writer Charles Griffith and others.

Disney acquired the library of Corman's cult films and plans to release the titles over the next year. It's unclear how many will be released, but Corman said it's possible there are films he's never seen since they first screened. Now 80, Corman has produced more than 400 movies and directed more than 50.

Saw, Saw II Producer Gregg Hoffman Dies at 42

From The LA Times:
Gregg Hoffman, who produced the current hit horror film "Saw II," has died. He was 42.

Hoffman died Sunday at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, where he had been admitted after complaining of neck pain, his business partners said. He died of natural causes, according to a news release from Lions Gate Entertainment, which distributed his recent films. An autopsy will be performed.

Hoffman began working for Disney in 1995, rising to become a senior vice president of production and earning a producer credit on "George of the Jungle" (1997).

In the summer of 2003, the three partners assembled the financing for "Saw" and started Twisted Pictures to make more low-budget horror movies.

The "Saw" films' success led to multi-picture development deals with Lions Gate and Dimension Films. Hoffman was working on the movies "Saw III" and "Crawlspace" when he died.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirmed for Grudge 2

From Dread Central:
The Grudge scribe Stephen Susco has shed some light on the speculation revolving around Sarah Michelle Gellar's reprisal as Karen Davis in the sequel.

"SMG is back. Without giving anything away, we've all been pretty focused on making a sequel that has a strong raison d’etre - a second chapter to an evolving story, instead of a sequel that’s made just because the first one performed well," says Susco who's quite optimistic about G2's progress. "I think we’re making good strides towards that goal. Personally, I just want to make sure that it’s the kind of film that satisfies fans of the first one...and hopefully pulls in some new fans as well."
