New Indie Film - Awaken The Dead

Today we recieved word from Director Jeff Brookshire about his new indie film "Awaken The Dead". This is what we had to say.

- The Monster

AWAKEN THE DEAD is an exciting and darkly humorous horror / action film unlike any movie you’ve seen before. A priest haunted by a violent past. An assassin’s daughter hiding from the world. Asian schoolgirl zombies. An innocent Jehovah’s Witness in the wrong place at the wrong time. A mysterious watcher. All woven together in a vastly entertaining tale of redemption…and zombies.

What sets this movie apart is the attention to story and character that all films deserve but few zombie movies have. There is mystery, a vast conspiracy that the characters need to uncover. There is conflict. There is growth. There is blood and there is heroism. But there is also humor, a dark and biting mirth, beneath most scenes. In short, this film rocks. With a vibrant alternative soundtrack, battle hardened cynicism and heart, this movie will pull you in and take you away.

The Hills Have Eyes Sequel

From Fangoria:
Wes Craven to write a Hills Have Eyes sequel. At a taping for his FANGORIA TV SCREAMOGRAPHY profile, Wes Craven revealed that he and son Jonathan will be writing the sequel to Alexandre Aja’s Hills Have Eyes remake.

After HILLS took in over $40 million in the U.S. alone, Craven and producing partner Marianne Maddalena offered the inevitable follow-up to Frenchman Aja (who co-wrote the redux with pal Gregory Lavasseur). Aja declined. “So my son and I decided to write it ourselves, and we are hard at work,” Craven says. “I wrote Last House On The Left in three days, so this shouldn’t be so tough.” Craven and son previously collaborated on the Lance Henriksen horror movie Mind Ripper, which, coincidentally, had begun life as a third Hills movie back in 1995 before being reconfigured as a stand-alone film. The latest HILLS 2 will ignore Craven’s own critically lambasted HILLS sequel from 1985, dog flashback and all. So with Aja out of the picture, who will direct the new HILLS?

“We’re talking with Michael J. Bassett, now that Alexander is busy on another project,” Craven reveals.

The new HILLS will shoot this summer, and Craven himself plans on directing a movie of his own in the next year. “I’m writing a film called BUG,” Craven says. “It’s an original script, and it’s not about killer insects. It’s a thriller set in a high school. The bug of the title refers to a surveillance device.”

Crypt of the Loving Damned

We had this post on our Monsters A Go-Go Forums and I wanted to pass it along to you. It's a trailer for a new movie called "Crypt of the Loving Damned".

Here is a little description:

"Just wanted to drop a line about a real cool horror-dark fantasy film coming up may 10th. It's a small montreal canada area company who produced it. It's an hommage to Italian 60s style mario bava films. You can trace vincent price influences and all. It's a real sexy film with loads of babes in nurse-nuns and babydoll outfits. there is blood for everyone and the whole thing is pretty much a colorfull gothic spider-web and chandeliers drama. It'll be on the short film fests circuit in quebec this summer."

Are You The Next "Mistress of the Dark"

From HollywoodReporter.com:
Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, is looking for a possible heir to her throne, and she is hoping to find one via a new reality project being shopped to broadcast and cable networks, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Cassandra Peterson, who created the character 25 years ago and has portrayed her in numerous shows and movies, and her manager, Eric Gardner of Panacea Entertainment, have teamed with reality TV producers Stuart Krasnow and FremantleMedia North America to pitch an unscripted project featuring contestants competing for a one-year contract to portray the character in various personal appearances.

The contestants would be put through elimination challenges designed to parody some of the most popular reality shows but with a macabre twist, with Peterson (in character) serving as a sort of mentor -- or "tormentor," as she puts it -- and judges making the final determination on who gets eliminated. FMNA, which produces shows like Fox's "American Idol," would produce. Peterson and Gardner would executive produce. Krasnow, who has executive produced such unscripted shows as NBC's "Average Joe" and "Weakest Link," also would executive produce through his production company, Stuart Krasnow Prods., which has an overall deal at FMNA. Peterson likens the idea of finding a new Elvira to that of Batman and Bozo the Clown, characters played by several actors over the years. "Obviously, I don't want to be walking around dressed up like Elvira when I'm 105 years old," Peterson said. Krasnow added that the project will have comedic and macabre elements. "We're looking at a show where the cast is going to be sleeping in coffins in a pretty scary place, and part of the production will be shot in Transylvania," he said. Gardner said the project is part of a broader plan to immortalize the character that includes an animated series as well as a family-friendly feature film centered on the "back story" of Halloween that features the Elvira character. "Our benignly megalomaniacal goal is to co-opt Halloween, immortalizing the Elvira character in the process," he said. "The opportunity to meld a major brand and a major holiday comes along once in a lifetime, if that."

Tales From the Crypt Season 4 DVDs

Tales From the Crypt Season 4 arrives on July 25th, 2006, and today Warner Bros. released the cover art for it, which you can see to your right. Nothing too flashy or different from the previous three, and that’s all right. Looks good on my DVD rack. Within this season are episodes like "Split Personality" about a lounge lizard getting more than cheap thrills when he marries identical twins, "Werewolf Conerto" starring Timothy Duton on the hunt for the beast, and more episodes with guest stars like Brad Pitt, Mimi Rogers, and Treat Williams.

As with the previous releases, all the episodes are complete and uncut with the Cryptkeeper intros intact. Warner Bros. hasn't announced any extras for the set yet.

Comic Book Based On True Life Elderly Serial Killers Released

We received some information today from Writer: Shawn Granger about a new comic book that will be coming out this May. For more information read below and head on over to the PRWeb site to check out some inside scans and more.

- The Monster

From PRWeb:
King Tractor Press is releasing the first issue of Family Bones in May 2006. The first in an on-going series based on the Copeland murders.

King Tractor Press announced today that the first issue of their series Family Bones will be released in May 2006. In the first chapter of Family Bones, rebellious teen Sean is shuttled from one family member to the next, finally landing at the farm owned by his elderly Aunt and Uncle. There, the city boy must quickly adapt to the rigors of farm life. Sean must also adjust to the emotional and physical abuse that Uncle Ray visits upon his wife and nephew. Family Bones is based on a true story about teenage angst, family secrets, and murder on a small Midwestern farm.

Based on actual events, it's the story of the elderly serial killers Ray and Faye Copeland as seen through the eyes of their unwitting nephew who stays with them one summer.

"I know this is going to be a series with a bit of controversy," the writer Shawn Granger said. "It’s more hard edge than anything I’ve written before, but not without its lighter sides. Family Bones is unique in its mix of horror, romance, and coming-of-age genres. I really think readers will be shocked to find out that it's not all blood and gore, there are more layers to the story" Mr. Granger told a fan. "But it's definitely not a story for kids. I definitely didn't kiddy-coat the harsh realities either."

Orlando Baez, the artist on Family Bones Chapter 1 is very comfortable with dark stories. He's best known for his work in horror comics. Orlando said "'Family Bones' is a dark & gritty story. It's interesting and real and because of that I want to pencil and feed the story in a rough, scratchy style."

He is joined by the inker Kenneth Landgraf, whose resume includes many A-List comic book titles, including Wolverine, Superman, Hawkgirl, Nightwing, and Conan from both DC and Marvel studios.

Family Bones #1 will be available in May for a $3.50 cover price. You may preorder the book at our website at http://www.kingtractorfilms.com/ and currently distributed through http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/. King Tractor Press encourages readers to ask their local retailers for a copy.

Bubba Nosferatu On Track

From Sci-Fi Wire:
Director Don Coscarelli told SCI FI Wire that his once-scuttled plans for Bubba Nosferatu, a prequel to his monster-fighting Bubba Ho-tep movie, may be back on track after a series of major setbacks. First, the studio that owned the original title, MGM, was sold; then co-star Ossie Davis died last year. But what started off as a joke in the final frames of the 2002 cult hit may now be resurrected as a reality again, Coscarelli said in an interview.

"I'm putting a big effort into doing Bubba Nosferatu now," said Coscarelli, who wrote and directed the original dark comedy about an elderly Elvis (Bruce Campbell) and black John F. Kennedy (Davis) in a nursing home who fight an ancient Egyptian mummy curse.

"The project has a life of its own," said Coscarelli, who is working on the script in collaboration with writer Joe R. Lansdale, who came up with the original short story. "People seem to want it. We just have to get it finished. The whole idea of Bubba Nosferatu was a joke." The end of Bubba Ho-tep promised a sequel: Bubba Nosferatu: The Curse of the She-Vampire, starring Sebastian Haff, the fictional Elvis impersonator who supposedly switched places with the real Elvis and then wouldn't switch back.

The prequel will show the King in his 30s as he dabbles in the world of black magic and voodoo. "Bruce can't wait to put his Elvis jumpsuit back on again," Coscarelli said. "We hope to shoot this year."

For a little more information about Bubba Nosferatu head on over to the Sci-Fi Wire.

Anchor Bay's Cemetery Man DVD Specs Revealed

On Tuesday, June 13th, Anchor Bay Entertainment, an IDT Entertainment company, will release the eagerly-awaited U.S. DVD premiere of Cemetery Man, one of the most requested horror titles of the last decade. Revered by consumers and industry critics alike for releasing classic and cult horror films, Anchor Bay continues that tradition for Cemetery Man (aka Dellamorte Dellamore) with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, and resurrected with a SRP of $19.98

Directed by Michele Soavi, Cemetery Man stars Rupert Everett (My Best Friend’s Wedding and the voice of Prince Charming in Shrek 2) as Francesco Dellamore, a cemetery caretaker who finds that his seemingly dead-end job has recently become a little harder. Along with his sidekick Gnaghi (Francois Hadji-Lazaro), Francesco spends his days interning corpses and his nights killing “returners” – those who have risen from their grave seven days after burial. Life changes for Francesco when he falls for a beautiful, mysterious widow (Anna Falchi). When fate intervenes, Francesco must choose between Love Eternal and the Living Dead…

Ever since its release in 1994, Cemetery Man has shocked and tickled with its unique balance of the macabre and the comical. Anchor Bay Entertainment dug deep to find bonus features worthy of the film’s reputation, including:

* Widescreen Presentation (1.66:1), enhanced for 16x9 TVs
* Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound
* Death is Beautiful: The Making of Cemetery Man featuring all-new cast and crew interviews including director Michele Soavi, star Anna Falchi and more
* Michele Soavi Bio* Trailers

More Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Michael News

More new rumors from Robert Englund about a possible Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Michael match up.

- The Monster

From the Sci-Fi Wire:

Robert Englund, who originated the character of Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, told horror Web site Pit Of Horror that talks are underway with Halloween writer/director John Carpenter for a sequel to 2003's Freddy vs. Jason, with the addition of Halloween's Michael Myers.

In an interview with the site, Englund said that he already has ideas for the plot and would like to sit down with actress Jamie Lee Curtis and producer Jeff Katz to discuss them. "My idea would of course have to take place before Jamie Lee is killed in Halloween VIII," he said. "Almost as if Freddy vs. Jason vs. Michael Myers happened in the 90s or something, kind of like Aliens goes to Springwood or something. Bring back Jamie Lee's daughter, Jamie Lloyd, and maybe she could have some sort of goth expertise that would make it to where these guys couldn't stand a chance. I'd love to give Jamie Lee something to sink her teeth into as an actress. Throw away the pills, throw away the cigarettes, throw away the little bottles of vodka."

Englund also confirmed that a prequel to Nightmare on Elm Street is in the works, to be directed by John McNaughton (Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer). "I think it should go the C.S.I. route and be sort of like a docu-drama that shows his crimes against the children," Englund said. "Then you cast two of the greatest character actors you can find to play the lawyers that get him off. Then, of course, it leads up to Freddy being burned alive."
