New Harryhausen Movies Due

From Sci-Fi Wire:
Legendary visual-effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen's unproduced works may see the light of day now that independent production company Mindfire Entertainment has optioned the material for films, Mindfire's chief executive officer, Mark Altman, told SCI FI Wire. "We respect Ray Harryhausen," Altman said in an interview. "So when the opportunity came to get involved, it just seemed like a natural fit. To finally see these things come to the screen is very exciting."

The deal with Mindfire allows for four films to be made under the "Ray Harryhausen Presents" banner and will draw on ideas Harryhausen has had over the years for new Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans movies, as well as a science fiction concept called The Elementals. The deal also includes projects that have "lost world" and "alien invasion" themes. (Mindfire is best known for inexpensive independent genre films such as House of the Dead and Room 6, as well as the theatrical releases Free Enterprise and The Specials.)

"Some of [Harryhausen's] ideas were extremely well thought out," Altman said. "Others are just log lines and notions that Ray was noodling over. Our writers will expand upon these concepts, in consort with Ray, into full stories."

Altman said that the deal initially allows for four films, but could go beyond that number. Altman added that Harryhausen will be actively involved in the development of stories and will oversee special effects. "What he did for his films in the past is what he will bring to his films in the future," Altman said. "It will be Dynarama for a new era. We suspect that a lot of the effects for these films will be done in CGI, but they will contain a feel that will be true to the classic Dynarama process." Altman said that the first film will most likely be shot this fall and will be released sometime in 2007.

Harryhausen is known for his groundbreaking visual effects in films such as Mysterious Island, Jason and the Argonauts, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad and Clash of the Titans. In 1992, Harryhausen received the Gordon E. Sawyer Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, presented to an individual in the motion-picture industry whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry.

In related news, Harryhausen will be working in a consultant capacity with San Diego-based Legend Films on the colorization of director Merian C. Cooper's 1935 film version of H. Rider Haggard's novel She. Harryhausen has also signed a contract with U.K.-based trading-card company Strictly Ink to put out a series of trading cards featuring images from his films, as well as preproduction art. No release date for the card set has been announced.

The Infested Sound Short Film - "Suzy"

A maturing young girl decides it is now time to give up her childish past. Little did she know, her past wasn't ready to give up on her.

This short horror film was filmed and produced by Jeff of The Infested Sound. "Suzy", was a class project in a college film class. The film had a ZERO dollar budget, and a 2 hour time frame for filming. (Suppose to emphasize rapid production.) Hope you enjoy!

Blade: The Series Bites Deeper - Begins Tonight On Spike TV

From The Sci-Fi Wire:
David S. Goyer, co-creator and executive producer of Spike TV's upcoming Blade: The Series, told SCI FI Wire that the television series will bite deeper into the franchise's mythology than the three Blade movies that Goyer also wrote. "It's a serialized show, so we're having the opportunity to tell a single story over the course of 13 episodes," he said in an interview. "So we're getting to kind of delve much more into the whole kind of inner workings of the vampire world. We're treating them sort of like the ultimate crime family. ... [Like The Sopranos] with blood-drinking, I guess."

Goyer co-wrote the two-hour Blade pilot with comic author Geoff Johns. Peter O'Fallon (Suicide Kings, Eureka, American Gothic) directed it. Goyer wrote all the Blade movies and directed the third one, Blade: Trinity. All are based on the venerable Marvel Comics franchise. (Goyer's fellow executive producer, Davis Simkins of Charmed and FreakyLinks, will be the show runner for Blade: The Series

Writer and supervising producer Dan Truly explained that the show will open up the character of the half-vampire warrior, played by Kirk "Sticky" Jones. "There's a kind of tension between keeping Blade the hero of the show, but also opening up his character dramatically, to understand who he is, where he comes from," Truly said. "TV does character stories much better. There's only so much action you can do on a TV budget and a TV schedule, but the key is to keep all the elements of Blade and just to open up the stories more so we understand who he is and understand more of a more complicated kind of political vampire world."

Blade: The Series premieres June 28 at 10 p.m. ET with limited commercials.

Scarier Than “Shark Week” and Better Looking … Monsters HD’s “Fish Fright Nights” Airs the Week of Sunday July 30th thru Friday August 4th!

“There is a creature alive today that has survived millions of years of evolution. Without change, without passion, and without logic. It lives to kill, a mindless eating machine. It will attack and devour anything. It is as if God created the Devil and gave him… Jaws.”

Those ominous words were the first warning to moviegoers everywhere that there was something very frightening lurking underneath the water, something that would not only terrify them but change film history as we know it. Steven Spielberg’s JAWS is a classic monster movie that holds up as well today as it did in 1975. Countless sequels, rip-offs and parodies may have followed in its wake, but JAWS is still a powerful motion picture experience. And now the history of JAWS is about to begin a new chapter as Monsters HD is proud to present the high definition television premiere of Steven Spielberg’s classic tale of a monster shark, followed by its three sequels and several other fearsome fish flicks. Monsters HD’s “Fish Fright Nights” premieres Sunday July 30th thru Friday, August 4th. Just when you thought it was safe to watch television, the fear is back with high definition on Monsters HD.

PIRAHNA (1978), JAWS (1975), JAWS 2 (1978), JAWS: THE REVENGE (1987), BARRACUDA (1978)

This summer, the ocean will have never looked this blue, this deep, or this … red than it does with Monsters HD’s “Fish Fright Nights” with the HD television premiere of Steven Spielberg’s JAWS and its sequels. Trust us, this beats “Shark Week” any old time.

QUESTION: Are you you planning on using any previous characters from the first 8 films (like Laurie Strode and Dr. Loomis) or are you planning something entirely new with no old characters?

Pitt outbids DiCaprio for zombie film rights

In a high-six-figure deal, Paramount Pictures acquired screen rights to the Max Brooks novel "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War." Brad Pitt's Plan B will produce.

Brooks' follow-up to satire "The Zombie Survial Guide" sparked a bidding battle, with Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way on the other side of the table from Par and Pitt.

Book is a sober telling of the aftermath of a war fought against a legion of humans who were inflicted with a virus, died and were reanimated into flesh-eating zombies.

"World War Z" will be published in the fall by Crown.

Masters of Italian Horror

From Variety:
Looking to revive the Italian slasher genre dear to Quentin Tarantino, state film entity Istituto Luce will co-produce and release locally an ultraviolent pic package including new works by cult vets Lamberto Bava, Umberto Lenzi and Sergio Martino.

Unveiled to journos in Rome's skull-filled wax museum, the four-pic Masters of Italian Horror package is co-produced by Luce with Luciano Martino's Dania Film and the Turin Film Commission. Luce is seeking an international sales company for the slashers, which are to be completed by June 2007.

Though inspired by Showtime's Masters of Horror series, new Italo slasher slate has no links with the Showtime web. Package instead marks a rare case of Italo product for which financing from local broadcasters has purposely not been sought.

Low-budget pics will be shot digitally in Piedmont, at the foot of the Italo Alps.

"For once we won't be slaves to the sugar-coated tastes of TV audiences," said Lenzi.

Lenzi's credits include 1969 thriller "Orgasmo" (aka "Paranoia") featured in Venice fest retrospective "The Secret History of Italian Cinema." The 2004 retro, tubthumped by Tarantino -- who often credits Italo B-movies as inspiration -- has been instrumental in drawing attention to the Italo slasher genre, which was highly lucrative in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, before Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset ushered in Italo commercial TV.

Haunting Psyches Cold Cases

John J. Oliver, a self-styled medium and star of Court TV's upcoming paranormal investigative reality series Haunting Evidence, told SCI FI Wire that he's been offered many TV shows, "one more ridiculous than the other." But it wasn't until this series, which investigates criminal cold cases, that he was interested in being involved, he said. "It reminds me of putting Unsolved Mysteries together with Psychic Detective," Oliver said in an interview. It's got "a little bit of spooky, haunted kind of feeling" to it.

Haunting Evidence tackles one cold case per episode and follows Carla Baron, who calls herself a "psychic profiler," and Oliver as they perform apparent psychic readings based on only a name and location. "We don't prefer to know any details until we give our first reading so that we don't have any mental noise disturbance," Oliver said.

They travel to a significant location where a missing or murdered person might have spent time or where a body was found. Acting as their guide is so-called paranormal investigator Patrick Burns, who also operates paranormal equipment.

For more from this interview and more information about Haunting Evidence head on over to the SCI FI Wire. Also don't forget to check it out the Haunting Evidence website.

Stop Motion Monster Mania This July On Monsters HD

Monsters HD Celebrates the Art of Stop Motion Animation with “Stop Motion Monster Mania” This July
Festival Includes the High Definition World Premiere of One of the Greatest Monster Films of All Time - KING KONG!
When animator Willis O’Brian created his groundbreaking stop motion animation effects work in 1933’s KING KONG, no one knew just how much it would change cinema. KONG would also influence a generation of great animators who sought to duplicate the master’s work. In 2005, that influence was felt in two of the films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature that animated solely through stop motion, TIM BURTON’S CORPSE BRIDE and the winner, Nick Park’s WALLACE & GROMMIT: CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT and with Peter Jackson’s blockbuster remake of KONG. Interest in stop motion is at a new high, with those hit films, the release of stop motion master Ray Harryhausen’s new book, The Art of Ray Harryhausen (from Billboard Books), and a new series of stop motion short films based on the works of Edgar Allen Poe, produced by Harryhausen himself. It is in celebration of this great cinematic art form that Monsters HD pays tribute to the great stop motion animators with its daylong “Stop Motion Monster Mania Marathon” on July 28th and July 29th. For two days, some of the greatest moments in stop motion animation will be showcased with some of the greatest monster movies to take advantage of the craft, all broadcast in beautiful high definition. While stop motion may be an arduous task taking many months, all you’ll ever need to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the show on Monsters HD.
Films Include: KING KONG (1933), SON OF KONG (1933), MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949), THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (1953), THE BLACK SCORPION (1957), CRATER LAKE MONSTER (1977), THE GIANT BEHEMOTH (1959), THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD (1974), SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER (1977), ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (1966), WHEN DINSAURS RULED THE EARTH (1970).
It’s a day’s worth of monsters, dinosaurs, legendary creatures and great fun with Monsters HD’s “Stop motion Monster Mania” in beautiful HD on July. Who needs those CGI summer blockbusters when you’ve got this?

Battle Royale To Be Remade

Variety reports:
New Line has decided to launch "Battle Royale," buying the remake rights to the controversial Japanese sci-fi pic and setting up the project with Neal Moritz and Roy Lee.

Original film, produced by Toie and released in 2000 amid concerns about its violence, is set in an apocalyptic future in which schools are overrun by uncontrolled violence; the government responds by organizing an annual Battle Royale, in which a school class is picked at random and students are pitted against each other on an abandoned island in a game of survival.

Toie also produced a sequel in 2003, "Battle Royale II --Requiem," in which a new class of teen students are forced to battle a rebel group let by a survivor of a previous Battle Royale.

Moritz's Sony-based Original banner has upcoming releases including Sony's "The Gridiron Gang" and Universal's "Tokyo Drift," the third installment of "The Fast And The Furious" franchise. Producing credits for Lee's U-based Vertigo Entertainment shingle include horror imports "The Ring" and "The Ring Two," sequel "The Grudge 2" and "The Lake House."

National Day of Slayer - 6.6.06

6.6.06 isn't a date that comes around very often (once per millennium, to be exact), and while plenty of stupid horror movies and terrible albums will be released for the hype value of the day that bears "the number of the beast" The NDoS decided that this would be a perfect day for Hessians across the country to come together and engage in something upon which we can all agree - listening to Slayer!

Official Statement on Participation
• Listen to Slayer at full blast in your car.
• Listen to Slayer at full blast in your home.
• Listen to Slayer at full blast at your place of employment.
• Listen to Slayer at full blast in any public place you prefer.

DO NOT use headphones! The objective of this day is for everyone within earshot to understand that it is the National Day of Slayer. National holidays in America aren't just about celebrating; they're about forcing it upon non-participants.

Taking that participation to a problematic level
• Stage a "Slay-out." Don't go to work. Listen to Slayer.
• Have a huge block party that clogs up a street in your neighborhood. Blast Slayer albums all evening. Get police cruisers and helicopters on the scene. Finish with a full-scale riot.
• Spray paint Slayer logos on churches, synagogues, or cemeteries.
• Play Slayer covers with your own band (since 99% of your riffs are stolen from Slayer anyway).
• Kill the neighbor's dog and blame it on Slayer.

More Halloween / Rob Zombie News

Rob Zombie writes on his official blog:
"Okay here's the real deal for those of you who are confused. As I said yesterday - I am not making Halloween 9. That series is done, complete, over.

But what I am doing is starting totally from from scratch. This the new HALLOWEEN. Call it a remake, an update, a reimagining or whatever, but one thing that for sure is this is a whole new start... a new begining with no connection to the other series. That is exactly why the project appeals to me. I can take it and run with it.

I talked to John Carpenter about this the other day and he said, "Go for it, Rob. Make it your own". And that's exactly what I intend to do.

------------------------

Now here's some more news from Variety:

"This is a bit of a prequel and a remake, combine," Zombie tells Variety.

"Over 25 years and a lot of movies, a very scary character became something of a Halloween cliche, with Michael Myers dolls that play the Halloween music when you press their stomachs. By the end of the sequel cycle, there was little connection to the original. I take that film very seriously, and I want to make it terrifying again."

Before signing on, Zombie said he sought out Carpenter, who has had several of his films remade.

"The original 'Halloween' is hallowed ground to me, and I talked to him about it and he was very supportive of what I wanted to do," Zombie said.

Rob Zombie To Write and Direct Halloween 9

DIMENSION FILMS TO MAKE NEW “HALLOWEEN” FILM;
AUTEUR FILMMAKER ROB ZOMBIE TO WRITE AND DIRECT

Trancas International Films to ProduceAlong With Rob Zombie and Andy Gould
Dimension Films is proud to announce that they will make a new “Halloween” movie with Rob Zombie (The Devil's Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses) writing, directing and serving as a producer. Malek Akkad of Trancas International Films (Halloween H20: 20 Years Later) will produce the feature along with Andy Gould of Vision Entertainment Group (The Devil's Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses). Zombie will also serve as music supervisor on the film. Miramax Films will co-finance the development with Dimension Films. The announcement was made today by The Weinstein Company co-chairman, Bob Weinstein.
Zombie's vision of this film is an entirely new take on the legend and will satisfy fans of the classic "Halloween" legacy while beginning a new chapter in the Michael Myers saga. This new movie will not only appeal to horror fans, but to a wider movie-going audience as well. It will not be a copycat of any prior films in the "Halloween" franchise. The film is set for an October 2007 theatrical release.

Bob Weinstein stated, "Rob Zombie is a gifted musician and performer as well as a talented filmmaker. His vision for this new 'Halloween' is spectacular and I am thrilled to be collaborating with him and to work closely with Malek Akkad to continue the legacy built by his father, the late Moustapha Akkad."

Zombie said, "I have been a huge, huge fan of John Carpenter's original film since its release. So when Bob Weinstein approached me about this, I jumped at the chance to join forces with Dimension Films on this amazing project."

The "Halloween" story began with the 1978 release of "John Carpenter's Halloween," executive produced by the late Moustapha Akkad, founder of Trancas International Films and became the highest grossing independent film of the time. Moustapha Akkad's son, Malek, is now taking some of the reigns on this new "Halloween" project to continue the outstanding work begun by his father. Malek Akkad stated, "Trancas is very excited to be working with Rob Zombie and producing another 'Halloween' with Bob Weinstein and Dimension, the home of the franchise for the last three installments. It will be a fitting and worthy tribute to my late father."

"I am thrilled to be working again with Rob and with Dimension Films on such an iconic project that will reinvigorate 'Halloween' and Michael Myers in a truly terrifying new way," stated Andy Gould, Rob Zombie's long time manager and producer of Zombie's two previous films.

Richard Saperstein, president of production, Matthew Stein, senior vice president of production and Alex Franklin, director of development and production will oversee the project on behalf of Dimension. Bret McCartney of Trancas International will oversee production on behalf of Trancas.

Andrew Kramer, executive vice president of business and legal affairs, and Lumumba Mosquera, senior vice president of business and legal affairs, negotiated on behalf of Dimension Films. Attorneys David Fox and Jeffrey Light of Myman Abell Fineman Greenspan & Light negotiated on behalf of Rob Zombie. Attorney Wayne Kazan of Weissmann Wolff Bergman Coleman & Silverman negotiated on behalf of Akkad. Rob Zombie is represented by Paradigm.

Spend an entire day’s worth of summer camp fun, frolic, fornication and decapitation, all in beautiful high definition. It’s better than going to summer camp because, well, you won’t get murdered, for starters.
Films Include:
SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983) (American Eagle) Director: Robert Hiltzik “A nice place for summer vacation - a perfect place to die!” A teenaged girl is sent to a Sleepaway Camp where her peers taunt her and consequently die in bizarrely violent ways. Stars Felissa Rose and Jonathan Tiersten

Years later, the summer camp is plagued by a serial killer! Make-up effects by Tom Savini. Look for Jason Alexander, Fisher Stevens and Holly Hunter in their film debuts.

MADMAN (1981) Director: Joe Giannone. “Deep in the woods, lurks a hideous evil... Don't even whisper his name!” Based on an upstate New York summer camp legend known as The Kropsy Maniac. During a campfire gathering, the elder member of the group tells of a spooky legend regarding a certain "Madman Marz," a maniacal farmer who slaughtered his family with an axe and retreated into the woods. Legend has it that if you should dare to say his name above whisper, the Madman would heed the call and return to kill anyone entering his domain.

FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) (Paramount/Sean S. Cunningham Films) Director: Sean S. Cunningham. “They were warned. They are doomed. And on Friday the 13th, nothing will save them!” This is the one that started it all, spawning the most prolific horror franchise of the 1980s, which produced 9 sequels. Make-up by Tom Savini. Adrienne King, Betsy Palmer and a young Kevin Bacon star.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 (1981, Paramount) Director: Steve Miner - "The Body Count Continues". Five year after the events of FRIDAY THE 13th, Camp Crystal Lake is about to reopen when a new batch of camp counselors meet a grisly fate. It's the first screen appearance of Jason as a killer, before the hockey mask; in the film that many believe is the best of the series.

FRIDAY THE 13TH – THE FINAL CHAPTER (1984) (Paramount) Director: Joseph Zito. “Three times before you have felt the terror, known the madness, lived the horror. Jason’s back, and this is the one you’ve been screaming for. This is the one you’ll be dying for. Friday April 13th is Jason’s unlucky day.” The masked maniac meets his match in little a horror fan, Tommy Jarvis (Corey Feldman).

Rob Zombie to tackle Halloween 9?

From Fangoria:
Around Hollywood, one dark topic has been spoken about in whispers: Who’s directing HALLOWEEN 9? It’s a mystery that’s confounding message board users and Michael Myers fans across the web—not to mention a secret that the execs at Dimension Films have been protecting as if their lives depended on it. This writer is amazed that the following hasn’t been leaked already…

Remember a few months back—around the time THE DEVIL’S REJECTS made its DVD debut—when writer/director Rob Zombie (pictured on the REJECTS set) teased us with how his next project was going to be “big”? Fango has learned from many sources around town that Zombie has, been in talks with Dimension about helming HALLOWEEN 9. Attempting to confirm this, Fangoria says no one is talking.

Furthermore, it’s uncertain as to whether he’s aiming to do the oft-rumored “lost years” prequel or an original chapter of his own. We can assure you, however, that the buzz concerning Zombie’s flirtation with the white-masked one has grown progressively louder.
