J.J. Abrams & Stephen King May Adapt Dark Tower

From Sci-Fi Wire:
Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams and horrormeister Stephen King are in talks to bring King's epic Dark Tower book series to either the big or small screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Abrams' Bad Robot company has a first-look deal at Paramount for film projects and a deal with Warner Brothers Television for TV projects; the project is not yet set up at either company.

Abrams (director of Mission: Impossible III) is currently attached to co-write and produce the proposed 11th Star Trek movie, but rumors are that he may not helm the sequel.

The trade paper quoted unnamed sources as claiming that a number of entities have been chasing Tower, but that King is looking for strong filmmaker involvement, which is where Abrams enters the picture. It is unclear whether Abrams would take on the project solely as a producer or whether he would direct as well. But King hasn't been shy about admitting that he's a huge fan of Lost; recently he participated in a roundtable for Entertainment Weekly with Abrams and Lost executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.

Mark Romanek To Direct 'The Wolf Man' Remake

The Hollywood Reporter writes:

Director Mark Romanek has been hired to bring "The Wolfman" to the big screen. Scott Stuber and Mary Parent are producing the remake of the classic Universal Studios monster, which has Benicio Del Toro attached to star. Del Toro also is on board as a producer with Rick Yorn.

The movie will hew to the period pedigree of the 1941 original, in which a man returns from the U.S. to his ancestral home in Victorian-era Great Britain, gets bitten by a werewolf and begins a hairy moonlight existence.

Andrew Kevin Walker wrote the screenplay.

A fall start is being planned.

"Mark has a great love and knowledge of film," Stuber said. "He's a great and authentic storyteller. He looks for the truth in the characters, the scenes and in the set design. It's going to be exciting to see what he brings to the horror genre.

"Music video helmer Romanek, who directed the Weezer video "El Scorcho" and Johnny Cash's "Trust," wrote and directed "One Hour Photo." He is repped by Endeavor and Anonymous Content.

Gremlins 3 News / Rumors

From Moviehole:
Rumor has it that Warner Premiere – the newly constructed direct to video sequel arm of Warner Bros – might be looking at bringing the kings of the midnight munchies back for another bite. If it happens, the brains behind the original 80s hit won’t be happy.

Talking to Empire Magazine, Producer Michael Finnell mentioned that “they [WB] might do a low-budget direct-to-DVD version”, but neither he nor director Joe Dante would donate their services to it.

According to Dante, “Gremlins was governed by the technology that produced it. Now it would be CHI, and you could do anything. There may be places for the jokes to go. But you’ve got a company who owns the rights to a movie that they don’t quite understand. I think it’s going to be difficult for them to make another one”.

Eddie becomes the recipient of the only copy of Curr's unreleased album, which when played backwards sends a message of destruction and as Halloween approaches, Eddie begins to realize this isn't only rock 'n roll... it's life and death and he must draw the line to thwart this mission.

Nothing is what it seems when a suburban couple learns the dangers of blowing out a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight; four women cross paths with a costumed stalker at a local festival; a group of pranksters goes too far and discovers the horrifying truth buried in a local legend; and a cantankerous old hermit is visited by a strange trick-or-treater with a few bones to pick.

Cannibal Holocaust Remake In The Works

From Variety:
Relevant Entertainment has acquired rights to and will remake the 1980 cult horror film "Cannibal Holocaust." It's aiming for a summer start.

Relevant partner Michael Menchel and associate Steve Whitney will produce. The project is fully financed by Keith Previte of Scorched Earth Entertainment and Catherine Williams, who also will serve as producers. Paul Mason, Jordan Rush and Larry Joackim will exec produce.

The original, directed by Italian helmer Ruggero Deodato, has been banned in dozens of countries due to its gore and violence. Pic centers on a professor traveling to South America to find out what happened to a film crew that disappeared while shooting a documentary about reputed cannibal tribes. He eventually discovers the remains of the crew and several reels of undeveloped film, which show the disastrous consequences of the crew's decision to provoke the natives.

Deodato shot the pic in documentary style and was jailed briefly after the Italian premiere until he could prove the actors were unharmed.

Whitney, who spent six months securing the rights, previously partnered with Previte for the 2005 remake of "The Amityville Horror." Whitney and Previte also exec produced "Borderland" for Lionsgate.

Relevant's in pre-production on "Haunting in Connecticut" for Gold Circle/Lionsgate and is developing "The Tortoise and the Hippo" for Walden Media and "Pledged" for Paramount.
