Biohazard/Resident Evil: Degeneration News

Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan and game maker Capcom will jointly produce feature toon "Biohazard: Degeneration," based on the "Resident Evil" films and games, the partners said Monday.

The "Resident Evil" franchise is known as the "Biohazard" series in Japan.

Skedded for release in the latter half of 2008, the toon, like the other "Resident Evil" pics, is based on a hit horror game that Shinji Mikami created and Capcom developed for the Sony PlayStation.

Since its debut in 1996, the game and its series successors have sold 33 million units worldwide.

The toon will be 3-D CG and based on an original story; the helmer and other cast and crew are yet to be announced.

The live-action pic series, starring Milla Jovovich, has generated three entries, the latest being "Resident Evil: Extinction," which has earned $50 million at the U.S. box office and $100 million worldwide since its Sept. 21 release.

One-Third Believe In Ghosts

News coming from the Associated Press this week.

About 34 percent of people polled by the Associated Press and Ipsos say they believe in ghosts, the wire service reported. That's the same proportion who believe in unidentified flying objects, exceeding the 19 percent who accept the existence of spells or witchcraft.

Forty-eight percent believe in extrasensory perception, or ESP.

The roughly one-third who believe in ghosts and UFOs is about the same as the 36 percent who said they are baseball fans, the 37 percent who said the United States made the right decision to invade Iraq, and the 31 percent who approve of the job President Bush is doing.

A smaller but still substantial 23 percent say they have actually seen a ghost or believe they have been in one's presence, with the most likely candidates for such visits including single people, Catholics and those who never attend religious services. By 31 percent to 18 percent, more liberals than conservatives report seeing a specter.

Three in 10 have awakened sensing a strange presence in the room. Fourteen percent, mostly men and lower-income people, say they have seen a UFO.

Spells and witchcraft are more readily believed by urban dwellers, minorities and lower-earning people. Those who find credibility in ESP are more likely to be better educated and white: 51 percent of college graduates, compared to 37 percent with a high school diploma or less.

Underworld 3: The Rise of the Lycans News

From Hollywood Reporter:
Betting on the success of the first two "Underworld" films, Sony's Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment are teaming for a third installment in the series with the prequel "Underworld 3: The Rise of the Lycans."

Patrick Tatopoulos, who created the creature effects for the first two "Underworld" films, will make his directorial debut with this one, which starts production in January in Auckland, New Zealand.

"Underworld" creator Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films, will produce with Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi and Skip Williamson. Scott Strauss is overseeing for Screen Gems.

Screen Gems will distribute in North America, with Sony Pictures and Lakeshore distributing worldwide.

Michael Sheen will reprise his role of Lycan master Lucian. Bill Nighy also will return as vampire elder Viktor. Rhona Mitra ("The Number 23") is joining the cast as Viktor's daughter and secret lover to Lucian.

Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the first two films, will not be in the prequel.

"For the first time, we will experience the Underworld universe through the eyes of the Lycans," Wiseman said. "Patrick has always played such an essential part in helping to create 'Underworld' from the start. We have a terrific working relationship and a shared vision of the world and its characters, so I feel it is both exciting and fitting that Patrick now takes the helm on 'Rise of the Lycans.' UFO Hunters Announced By Sci Fi Channel

More news from the Sci-Fi Channel:
From the creators of SCI FI Channel's hit series Ghost Hunters, comes the search for paranormal phenomena of a different kind. UFO Hunters, a series from Emmy Award winning executive producer Craig Piligian, Tom Thayer and Piligian's Pilgrim Films and Television, sets out to investigate claims of UFO sightings and otherworldly experiences.

UFO Hunters will investigate, review and reveal, giving viewers a new perspective on the universe around them. "UFOlogists" have always walked the fine line between science and fantasy. Long objects of ridicule, there's a new generation of investigators using cutting-edge technology to legitimize the examination of evidence and separate genuine claims from works of fiction.

As with The Atlantic Paranormal Society of (TAPS) featured on Ghost Hunters, New York Strange Phenomena Investigators (NY-SPI), led by co-founders Oliver Kemenczky and Ted Davis, and supported by researcher/investigator Dennis Anderson, will bring to UFO Hunters their decades of experience and unquestioned credibility in the UFO community.

Don’t miss an exclusive Halloween 4 & 5 Double-Feature on the big screen for one night only! Plus, a special never-before-seen bonus – Halloween: Faces of Fear – an in-depth documentary directed by Mark Cerulli featuring interviews and rare behind-the-scenes footage including “Meet the Michaels” – conversations with six of the men behind the mask. In select movie theatres on October 30th at 7:30PM (local). The $10 ticket price includes Halloween 4, Halloween 5 and the special bonus documentary.
“Halloween 4 – The Return of Mike Myers,” originally released in 1988 and the third sequel to the original 1978 teen horror classic “Halloween,” follows Michael Myers’ escape from years of comatose incarceration while being transported from a maximum security institution. He goes back to the original setting of Halloween to find his sisters’ daughter, Jamie. The only man who can stop him is Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasance). But can he get there in time to save Jamie from Michael?
“Halloween 5 – The Revenge of Mike Myers” takes place approximately one year after the events of “Halloween 4.” Michael Myers is back on Halloween night to kill the last remaining member of his family. This time though, the town is ready for him, including Dr. Loomis.
“Halloween: Faces of Fear” is a specially produced documentary that expands the experience of seeing Halloween 4 & 5 on the big screen by using new and archival interviews with many members of the films’ original casts and crew – plus distinguished Halloween alumni. Interviews include John Carpenter, the late Moustapha Akkad, Tommy Lee Wallace, Ellie Cornell, Danielle Harris and more, plus rare behind-the-scenes-footage shot on the Utah set of Halloween 5. An added feature is “Meet the Michaels” – which offers interviews with six men behind the famous mask. Benicio Del Toro Talks About ‘The Wolf Man’

From MTV:
Del Toro seems psyched for the project to be directed by Mark Romanek. “We’re trying to go back to the original. There’s something very nostalgic about it for me. I loved all those monsters when I was a kid,” he said.

Asked if, as rumored, Anthony Hopkins is on board as well Del Toro said, “I think so,” before adding that the final deals haven’t been closed nor has a starting date been determined. Excitedly Del Toro said, “I have never done a horror film.” He quickly added with a laugh, “maybe a lot of my films already are horror films.”

Zombie TV Show "Alive" Coming In 2008

From TrekMovie.com:
Alive is set in a world that has faced a ‘zombie apocalypse’ where just a handful of people are holed up in a continuity of government bunker called ‘Falcon Rock.’ A global pandemic has converted the rest of the world into the brain eating undead. Star Trek novelists and Enterprise writers Judith and Garfield Reeves Stevens co-created the series (along with Matt Vancil) and will be the show runners.

Gary Graham stars as the the leader of Falcon Rock, Colonel Jonathan Manwary and John Billingsley plays the enigmatic Pastor Mordecai Webb. Rounding out the main cast will be Andrew McGinnis and Lia Johnson.

The show premieres in about a year so to build buzz they are doing ‘pre-pilot’ short teasers in the form of fictional video podcasts from the survivors of the apocalypse at Falcon Rock. Soldiers have weapon cams and helmet cams and they share what they learn with other survivors. The first one went live the other day today two more will be available later this month leading up to Halloween. Afterwards FalconRockCommand.com will be updated with new info on the show including blogs.

Fox Picks Up Abrams' Fringe

Fox has made a series commitment for Fringe, a spooky show from J.J. Abrams (Lost) and writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Transformers), Variety reported.

The Warner Brothers-Bad Robot production will start off with a two-hour pilot budgeted at more than $10 million. Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci—the brain trust behind Paramount's new Star Trek movie—wrote the project on spec and shopped it to the networks this week.

Fringe mixes elements of The X-Files and Paddy Chayefsky's Altered States with what Abrams called "a slight Twilight Zone vibe," the trade paper reported.

It will focus on brilliant but possibly crazy research scientist Walter Bishop, his estranged son and a female FBI agent who brings them together.

Episodes will explore self-contained mysteries of the paranormal, as well as the relationships between the three leads. There'll also be an overriding mythology that will come into play from time to time, as well as a healthy dose of humor.
