Colin The $70 Zombie Movie Hits The Big Screen

From CNN:
A zombie movie made using a camcorder for less then the price of a DVD box set is set to be distributed in cinemas across the UK.

"Colin," made by budding British director, Marc Price, will now get its own DVD as well as hitting the big screen in time for Halloween alongside Hollywood blockbusters like "Zombieland."

"It's kind of scary in a cool way," says Price of his success on a shoestring.

Price wrote, directed, shot and edited "Colin" over 18 months while working nights at a taxi company.

The 30-year-old first-time director says he managed to make the film for so little by advertising for volunteer zombies on social networking site, Facebook.

He also borrowed make-up and taught himself special effects by endlessly re-watching making-of featurettes and director's commentaries from his personal DVD collection.

Price says he spent the $70 on "a crowbar and a couple of tapes, and some tea and coffee -- just to keep the zombies happy."

Since "Colin's" success Price has been contacted by hundreds of fledgling filmmakers from around the world inspired to try making their own films despite a lack of money.

"That's the best bit," he said. "That someone like me at 16, wondering how they can make their movie will see mine and think, 'My mobile has better resolution than his camcorder.'

"Hopefully there's a chance that other filmmakers will make use of what resources they have to tell the best story they can."

Price says he will be putting his own making-of featurette on the "Colin" DVD to help young directors.

"We will blow the lid on all of our little tips and tricks," he told CNN. "The illusion will be completely destroyed, but I think it's important that other people see what we did."

"Colin" ingeniously spins the zombie genre on its head by telling the story entirely from the zombie's perspective. It follows Colin, played by Alastair Kirton, who slowly transforms into a zombie after being bitten.

Kaleidoscope Entertainment picked up the film after it generated buzz among distributors at Cannes film festival earlier this year -- many of whom were astonished to find out quite how little money was spent on making the film.

"Colin" will be released in between 6 and 15 cinemas across the UK, as well as showing at a number of festivals. There are currently no plans for international cinema distribution.

Price has now moved on to his next project, which he describes as a World War II drama with a horror element. "It's even got a creature at the end," he said.

The script is written, the cast is in place -- they even have a composer. Now all he needs is funding. "We'll need funding, not much, but a hell of a lot more than for 'Colin,'" Price added.

Horror DVDs Releases: July 14th

Here is a list of horror movies worth noting coming to DVD this week. To check out the all the horror movies coming to DVD this week head on over to Amazon.com and take a look.

- The Monster

Black Torment (1965) - This genuinely disturbing '60s horror-mystery movie from director Robert Hartford-Davis (Corruption, Bloodsuckers, The Fiend) is hailed as a British gothic masterpiece. The film follows Sir John Fordyce, a nobleman who returns after a long absence to his country estate with a new bride. However, his honeymoon is quickly cut short when he finds himself under suspicion from angry locals for the rape and brutal murder of a young village girl. Despite Sir John's professed innocence, a growing hysteria unfolds as more strange events occur around him...

In the tradition of Hammer Horror, but in the style of '60s Italian horrors, Black Torment is an an impressive and chilling period piece that sets the mood for horror and melodrama, complemented by plenty of heaving bosoms, galloping horses and swashbuckling sword fights with 18th century aristocrats.

Door Into Silence (1991) - He was called 'The Godfather Of Gore', 'Italy's Splatter King' and 'Il Maestro'. His still-controversial career included such horror classics as ZOMBIE, THE GATES OF HELL and THE PSYCHIC. And for his final film, writer/director Lucio Fulci returned to Louisiana - the location of his masterpiece THE BEYOND - for an eerie psychological tale of the supernatural. John Savage of THE DEER HUNTER stars as a businessman who encounters a mysterious beauty, a relentless hearse and his own ultimate nightmare while driving the back roads of the desolate bayou. Sandi Schultz co-stars in this rarely seen chiller - executive produced by the infamous Joe D'Amato (EMANUELLE AROUND THE WORLD) - that remains a must for all Fulci completists.

Fulci Frenzy: Psychic / Perversion Story 2 for 1 - Shortly before he surrendered to the gory excesses of horror, Lucio Fulci - the notorious director of ZOMBIE and PERVERSION STORY - crafted one last brilliant thriller with a killer twist. Jennifer O'Neill of SCANNERS stars as a clairvoyant tormented by visions of a violent murder. But will her own investigation into the crime lead to the most shocking discovery of all? Marc Porel (DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING) and Evelyn Stewart (THE WHIP AND THE BODY) co-star this chilling giallo that critics and fans - including avowed devotee Quentin Tarantino - consider the most stunning film of the maestro's entire career.

In a controversial career that flayed every envelope of cinematic excess, nothing can prepare you for this stunning thriller from the infamous director of ZOMBIE and THE BEYOND. Jean Sorel (BELLE DE JOUR) stars as an arrogant San Francisco doctor trapped between his sultry mistress (Elsa Martinelli of BLOOD AND ROSES) and an amoral stripper (Marisa Mell of DANGER: DIABOLIK) who bears an uncanny resemblance to his recently deceased and possibly murdered wife. What follows has been called Fulci's first true masterpiece, where sexual obsession, cruel deception and depraved murder all come together in one unforgettable PERVERSION STORY.

The Haunting in Connecticut (2009) - Based on a chilling true story, Lionsgate's THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT charts one family's terrifying, real-life encounter with the dark forces of the supernatural. When the Campbell family moves to upstate Connecticut, they soon learn that their charming Victorian home has a disturbing history: not only was the house a transformed funeral parlor where inconceivable acts occurred, but the owner's clairvoyant son Jonah served as a demonic messenger, providing a gateway for spiritual entities to cross over. Now, unspeakable terror awaits when Jonah, the boy who communicated with the dead, returns to unleash a new kind of horror on the innocent and unsuspecting family.

Prey (1978) - The lives of two lesbians, Jessica (Gloria Annen) and Josephine (Sally Faulkner), living in a deserted English farmhouse is thrown into turmoil upon the arrival of strange man called Anderson (Barry Stokes), who, unknown to them, is an alien scout on a mission to find food on Earth. Able to transform his appearance to that of a perfectly coifed human man, the alien brings tension to the the girls' relationship as Jessica starts to find him attractive. Much morbid excitement follows as Anderson's animalistic behavior leads to their downfall...

[REC] - From Executive Producers who brought you Quarantine, comes the movie that inspired the terror. A beautiful TV reporter (Manuela Velasco, Law of Desire) and her cameraman are doing a routine interview at a local fire station when an emergency call comes in. Accompanying the firefighters to a nearby apartment, the news team begins recording the bloodcurdling screams coming from inside an elderly woman's unit. After authorities seal off the building to contain the threat, the news crew, firefighters and residents are trapped to face a lethal terror inside. With the camera running, nothing may survive but the film itself.

The Zombie Pack - Zombie 3 (1983), 4 (1988) & 5(1987) Zombi 3-Lucio Fulci's Follow up to Zombi 2 where a terrorist group exposes a vacation island to an experimental bio-war gas, turning people into flesh eating maniacs. Zombi 4 After Death-Returning to the island her parents were urdered a scientist and group of mercenaries accidentally raise the dead by angering a voodoo priest. Zombi 5: The Killing Birds-A group of collage kids exploring and island find themselves trapped in a house and surrounded by the vengeful Living Dead of a murder long passed. Zombie Panic: Source

What would you do with zombies coming after you? Zombies are coming after any remaining humans, and the humans must fight them off as best they can. With little resources readily available, survivors are forced to work together in an attempt to survive.

For those horror fans who are gamers like me. I want to direct you over to Zombie Panic: Source. A new free Half-Live 2 Mod. You will need at least one "Source" game (Half-Life 2, Day of Defeat, etc.) to play this Zombie mod.

We want the mod to feel creepy and give you a sense of desperation, and yet not take itself so seriously that you can't laugh at the way you got slayed. Overall fun and playability is the priority, where is realism and horror while important are just a bonus when possible. We want a mod that you can easily play with any number of people, even with small numbers or uneven numbers. Plus, there's a certain sense of satisfaction in tearing apart the heartless survivors who failed to protect you while you were alive, limb from limb.

Head on over to the Zombie Panic: Source website for more information and download links now! And I'll see you in the game!
