Prom Night Carves Out $22.7M Debut

Audiences made a date with "Prom Night," the remake of the 1980 slasher flick that took in $22.7 million to debut as the weekend's No. 1 movie, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The movie, released by Sony's Screen Gems banner, stars Brittany Snow as a teen terrorized by a psycho killer on prom night. It overcame the critical drubbing handed to most fright films, which have a built-in audience that often turns out in big numbers on opening weekend regardless of reviews.

"Audiences today, they're so savvy in regards to what they want to see or don't want to see. Particularly a younger audience, they pretty much make up their own mind," said Rory Bruer, Sony head of distribution.

With prom season also at hand, that "brings an element of fun," Bruer said.

Friday the 13th Remake News

C.H.U.D. has come up with some spoilers for the Friday the 13th remake!

"Remaking Friday the 13th is actually more complicated than you might think. After all, there's no Jason Voorhees in the first film - his mom is the killer. And there's no hockey mask until Part III. It took until Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter for the classic Jason look and mythology to be really finalized. So what do you do when attempting to make a 21st century version? Do you really remake the first, with Mrs. Voorhees as the killer? How do you deal with the now cliched aspects of the slasher genre? Do you even need to bring back any elements from the original films, or do you just do a reboot?" Click on over to C.H.U.D. to read the rest!

Keanu Reeves to Play Klaatu in 'Earth Stood Still' Remake

From Variety:
Twentieth Century Fox has set Keanu Reeves to star in "The Day the Earth Stood Still," its re-imagining of the 1951 Robert Wise-directed sci-fi classic.

Reeves committed over the weekend to play Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by species watching from afar.

Erwin Stoff is producing, with Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") directing from a script by David Scarpa. Reeves' commitment puts the picture on track for a late fall or early 2008 production start. Studio sees it as a tentpole.

The Klaatu role was originated by Michael Rennie. The 1951 film's premise, a response to the rise of the Cold War after WWII, is being updated, and the film will use advances in visual effects.

Escape From New York Remake

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that New Line has won the bidding war for the remake of John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK that first hit the news earlier this week. In a package put together by the CAA agency, Gerard (300) Butler will take over the Snake Plissken role made famous by Kurt Russell, with Ken (BLACK HAWK DOWN) Nolan scripting the new take and Neal Moritz (currently in preproduction on Screen Gems' PROM NIGHT redux) producing. This ESCAPE, for which a director has yet to be signed, will combine the plot of the original film with an examination of Snake's origins; Carpenter is also on board as an executive producer, and tells the trade, "Snake is one of my fondest creations. Kurt Russell did an incredible job, and it would be fun to see someone else try."
